Our upcoming Heritage Excursion will take you to China and Africa without leaving Houston!
On May 3, depart from the University Museum at TSU to visit a Daoist/Buddhist temple. Prof. Jenny Chen from the Confucius Institute will lead a tour of the temple and will help you understand symbology and ritual found in Daoism and Buddhism.
Then discover more about the Swahili Coast through music, textile, and art presentations at the University Museum. Dr. Alvia Wardlaw, one of the foremost authorities on African art in the United States will give a talk as will Dr. Robert Galloway, a physician who worked closely with John Biggers, acclaimed African-American muralist who studied African myths and legends and was particularly drawn to creation stories.
A display of East African textiles, a music performance, and a buffet of delicacies from Tanzania and China help enrich understanding of traditions from two world cultures who have large communities in Houston.
